Innovative Mother’s Day Gifts: Flowers? Jewelry? or Recycled Trash?!……..a special post for the South Jersey Etsy Mother’s Day Blog Hop

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and it is time to think of the perfect gift!

We all know that gift giving can be tough. But when we are unsure of what to give, we can always tell ourselves that finding the right gift is less important than the kind-hearted thought….cause after all, it is ultimately “the thought that counts.” And this is extra true for our Mums….right?

Well, it turns out that this age-old euphemism is NOT always true.  Some gifts, for example, can be truly insensitive.   The fellow who gave his vegetarian mother a gift card for Five Guys Burgers and Fries and the dude who chose a membership to the Cheese-of-the-Month Club for his lactose-intolerant mother did not get away with “but its the thought that counts!”  The thought counted, alright…..it counted AGAINST THEM!

Other gifts can be just plain awkward.  For the gal whose mother loves her monthly ladies’ book club, a book seems like a good idea.  But if Mom’s book club consists mainly of the women from the local church choir, the Fifty Shades of Gray trilogy might be the wrong choice!  While some moms might truly appreciate these books, others will lose sleep over this gift……  Amd Mom’s sleepless nights won’t be the steamy Fifty Shades kind……. instead, they will be the fretful “where did I go wrong when I raised that child?” kind.  Don’t do that to your sweet mother!

And even if your gift isn’t insensitive or awkward, other gifts are just plain boring.  A spider plant from Home Depot?…..Really?

Now, of course, most moms will love, (or at least pretend to love) your gift, even if it is less than perfect.  But this year, why not try to find a gift that reflects who you really are?  And unlike our previously mentioned not-so-great gifters, I am sure that you are NOT insensitive, awkward, or boring!  (However, if the descriptions above seemed to resemble you in any way, it might be time to locate a life coach in your area…..ask your mom, she can probably help you find one!)

When it comes to a unique and possibly perfect gift, I vote, of course, for a gift made from upcycled materials. An upcycling artist takes materials that would otherwise be discarded and crafts them into things that are both useful and beautiful. Upcycled gifts are one-of-a-kind and are environmentally friendly, as they use materials slated for a landfill or incinerator. With the right upcycled gift, you can also support small businesses and buy items that are handmade.  For me, handmade PLUS upcycled equals the perfect gift!

Now if you are so inclined, you can repurpose some old materials into a gift yourself this year for dear old Mom. Remember those macaroni picture frames you made in kindergarten?….She loved those, right?

Or…. if you don’t have the skill set to do it yourself, you can find many handmade and upcycled gifts on Etsy.com, the crafter’s marketplace.  Your upcycled gift will be appreciated by Mom and will also say a little about you and your values. Your upcycled gift will scream out:

  • Mom, I want to make the planet a more sustainable place.
  •  Mom, I believe in reducing waste and reusing materials whenever I can.
  • Mom, I support the handmade movement!
  • Mom, I have difficulty throwing things away and love nothing more than picking through other people’s trash! (Wait… this last one is NOT about you at all….it is obviously about me!)

So if this is the message (minus number 4) that you want to send, go to Etsy.com and just enter the word “upcycled” in the search bar.  Or check out my RoofTop shop at the Etsy link above, where I make all kinds of coasters, perfect for Mother’s Day.  Cause after the spider plant incident, do you really want to mess up her coffee table, too?

Select her gift with thoughtfulness this year, and give your mother a good night’s sleep!

These tile coasters are finished with upcycled paper from many different sources…..like the pages of an old tattered children’s book…..

Or the pages of a beat-up Family Circle magazine issue from 1960 …..check out the “groovy” entertaining ideas!…..

Or even paper scraps! When I use scrapbooking paper for art projects, I can’t bring myself to throw away the left-over pieces. they are so pretty! So they end up on tile coasters too. WASTE NOT…..WANT NOT!

Blog-Hoppin’…….This special blog is linked to the blogs of other talented and oh so cool artisans from the South Jersey Etsy team!  These gals are all making phenomenal handmade goods and I love them all.  So check them out and have a Happy Mother’s Day!.

Your work is wonderful and I applaud the recycling. This is very important to do. These gifts really do more than just bring a smile to one’s face. They teach a valuable lesson that we all need to learn.
