Favorite Things

Neptune-1

When you saw “Favorite Things,” were you expecting Oprah’s Favorite Things?  Like where she gives away spectacular prizes like one million thread count sheets and $500 coffee makers……and Josh Groban CDS?

Well I was thinking more along the lines of raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.  And if you know me personally, you know I can’t resist a Sound of Music reference.

Anyone who has watched the Sound of Music knows that Maria Von Trapp was the original Super Nanny.  And when those seven kids in unisex nightshirts were afraid of a little bit of thunder, she taught those kids how to stave off fear or stress by simply imagining their favorite things (and singing about them too, of course).

Now in this modern world, we recognize that just remembering some of your favorite things might not fix every problems or cure every heartache.  In fact, it probably won’t actually fix or cure much of anything.  But it just might make you smile.

So this week, I am taking Maria Von Trapp’s advice and I am thinking of a few of my favorite things.  So here they are……don’t judge me!

-English royalty…….both dead and alive

-the sound of laughter, particularly my sons’……Josh and Jake  can REALLY  laugh. And usually at something that isn’t all that funny!

-thrift shops and yard sales and collecting other people’s junk.

-fog…..not the blinding kind, but the ethereal, magical kind.  On the right  foggy morning, I can almost see the lost town of Brigadoon in the distance…..and then I remember that I am in New Jersey.

-vegetable gardens and farmer’s markets

-reality TV…especially shows with obstacle courses and any show with Flavor Flav!

-board games and pressuring people who claim to hate them to play.

-vampire and werewolf stories, but not the scary kind.  I like my supernatural monsters to overcome their blood lust and become kind-hearted and nice.  But just FYI- Edward from Twilight is NOT one of my favorite things, because in spite of his overall goodness, he and Bella whine way to much.

-musical theater……including of course, The Sound Of Music!

And today, the worlds of two of my favorite things collided!  I learned that NBC is making a Sound of Music TV special for the holidays and that Captain Von Trapp is being played by Stephen Moyer, the star of Showtime’s vampire series, True Blood.   His character, vampire Bill, is stern and serious, and he falls for Sookie, a sweet and loveable girl from Louisiana.

Sound familiar?  Stern man falls for sweet girl……. The Captain and Maria?……..Vampire Bill and Sookie?

The similarities are eerie, right?  Just replace the Alps with the Bayou and add in a bunch of kids.  Oh yeah….also add in occasional nudity and some bad language and werewolves and shape shifters and witches…….okay, the similarities are NONE!   I should apologize to fans of both shows, who were probably shaking their heads just now and shouting “No! No! No! No! NO!”

But I still can’t wait to see vampire Bill sing Edelweiss…..it’ll be my new favorite thing!

So favorite things just make me happy.  But I wouldn’t admit to many of them on a resume or at a fancy dinner party, particularly Flavor Flav!   But Maria Von Trapp was right when she said that remembering favorite things can improve your mood.  I’m feeling pretty happy right now.

So what are your favorite things?   Feel free to share!

  1. Some of my favorite things: Mia & Chase the Weimaraners, Pearl Jam, reading trashy mystery novels and traveling somewhere for the first time. My favorite blog: this one! As always, a wonderful post!

  2. I like the sound of laughter too, especially if I said something to cause it. Something witty, not something stupid, ha ha.
